Agreement Between Laban And Jacob

The question of what is the connection between the seemingly incoherent accounts of Laban and Pharaoh is interpreted in different ways by the rabbinical authorities. Jacob informed Laban that he was aware that Laban had deceived him and continued to manipulate the terms of his original agreement. The following writing shows that he never broke this agreement. 48 Laban says, „This pile of this group is now a witness between you and me.“ (EH) That`s why we called it Galeed. 49 He was also called Mitspa, because he said, „May the Lord watch between you and me when we are separated from each other.“ 50 If you mistreat my daughters, or take women from my daughters, when there is no one with us, remember that God is a witness between you and me. (EL) 1) A clean animal cut and divided into heaps that Jacob and Laban would go back and forth between their consent. Indeed, Laban first married Jacob with Leah, which prompted Leah`s sons to simulate Joseph in the birth order, so that they rightly felt outraged when their father seemed to violate social norms by treating his second youngest son as his heir, before the natural and legal rights of his eldest sons. Laban can thus be seen as an „attempt to uproot everyone“, trying to separate the family tree from the patriarchs between Jacob and Joseph before the children of Israel become a small family. 43 Laban answered Jacob: Women are my daughters, children are my children, and flocks are my flocks. (EA) All you see is mine. But what can I do today against these girls of me or against the children they have children? 44 Come, then, let us make a covenant, you and I, and it will serve as a witness between us.

(CE) 34 „Agreed,“ Laban said. „Leave it as you said.“ 35 And on the same day he took out of all the striped or spotted or spotted male goats, from all the spotted or spotted goats, and from all the dark-coloured lambs, and placed them in the care of his sons. (Q) 36 He then took a three-day journey between himself and Jacob, and Jacob continued the rest of Laban`s flocks. 36 Jacob was angry, and he took Laban`s task. „What is my crime?“ he asked Laban. „How did I hurt you to rot me? (DG) 37 After searching all my goods, what did you find that part of your house? (DH) Put it here in front of your parents (DI) and mine, and let them judge between the two of us. (DJ) 51-53 Laban continues to Jacob: „This stone monument and this stone column that I have erected is a witness, a witness whom I will not cross this line to hurt you, and you will not cross that line to hurt me. The God of Abraham and the God of Nahor (the God of their ancestor) will hold things straight between us. Laban rejected God`s instructions not to speak to Jacob from good to evil. Instead, he decided to try to find hidden idols (an effort that seems futile) and to question Jacob`s integrity. The end result of his disregard for God`s command was the beginning of a great rift between Israel and the rest of the Middle East. 51 Laban also said to Jacob, „Here is this pile, and here is this column that I have placed between you and me.

52 This group is a witness, and this pillar is a witness, that I will not pass this band by your side to hurt you, and that you will not pass this pile and column beside me to harm me. 53 May the God of Abraham and the God of Nahor, the God of their Father, judge between us. (AND) Laban promised his youngest daughter Rachel Jakob, in exchange for seven years of service, just to get her to marry her eldest daughter, Leah.
